Emmi to Debut New Advance Care Planning Decision Aid at Stanford Medicine X 2017 Panel

Emmi program helps healthcare organizations support advance care planning

Chicago, IL — Sept 14, 2017 — Emmi, a leader in interactive patient engagement solutions, today announced Geri Lynn Baumblatt, executive director of patient engagement, will debut a new interactive multimedia program, “Who Speaks For You?” during a panel at Stanford Medicine X’s 2017 conference. The program encourages people to identify a healthcare proxy, start a discussion about end-of-life care with that person and other family members and understand next steps, like an advance directive, to formalize their decision. Intendend for all patients regardless of age or health status, the program demystifies the process and makes it feel more approachable.

“I always look forward to participating in Stanford Medicine X, and this year, I am especially eager to discuss the importance of advance care planning for both patients and healthcare organizations,” Baumblatt said. “At Emmi, we saw the need for a more accessible program that healthcare organizations can leverage to support advace care planning initiatives in a way that is approachable and ensures the patient’s values and choices are communicated when they can not speak for themselves. Facilitating these conversations can be difficult for clinicians and family members alike, so this program is a vital part of a broader patient engagement strategy.”

“Who Speaks For You?” uses plain, conversational language and compelling visuals to guide viewers through why and how to choose a healthcare proxy and urge them to consider who would be best equipped to carry out their wishes. The program is prescribed by clinical staff, and patients can view the program on computers, tablets or smart phones. In building the program, Emmi sought input from clinicians and experts in end-of-life care.

“Advance care planning resources are often underutilized due to the sensitivity of the topic, which can be an additional burden to both family and clinical staff,” said Dr. Michael Bennick, associate chief of medicine and medical director of the patient experience at Yale New Haven Health. “This new program from Emmi will help providers guide patients and their caregivers through these choices to ensure informed and confident decision-making.”

In addition to its “Who Speaks For You?” healthcare proxy program, Emmi offers hundreds of patient engagement programs and tools encompassing a wide range of topics and supporting the continuum of care.
